The volunteer programme offered by YFU South Africa is an opportunity for young people from any of our partner countries, aged 18 or older, to participate in a community service volunteer programme in Cape Town, within the guidelines of YFU.
Our volunteer programme is open to high school graduates, university students and young professionals who want to expand their horizon, discover a new country and culture, and gain practical experience in working with children, either in a daycare centre or in a home for orphans and children from difficult family backgrounds.
The programme is offered with a duration of 6 weeks to 6 months. It can also be combined with our other volunteer programme options, including a 3-months volunteer placement in neighbouring Namibia!

Volunteers live with a South African host family who has been welcoming volunteers for many years. The host family’s home is located in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, in a quiet residential area. Volunteers may have their own room or share a room with another volunteer, depending on the number of volunteers on programme.
During the week, volunteers will work at one of two local community centres, located in close proximity to the host family’s home:
- Option 1: A daycare centre for children aged 0-5 which is affiliated with a local church
- Option 2: A facility for children from difficult family backgrounds, aged 0-18 years.
Volunteers can use their weekends and off-days to explore the many attractions and activities Cape Town has to offer, including city tours, outdoor activities, hikes, cultural attractions, museums, wine farms, watersports and day trips to the surrounding areas. Longer trips can be arranged as well, ideally at the end of the volunteer’s stay.
Depending on the time of the year, as well as availability, volunteers might also have the opportunity to join the cultural trips that are offered for the participants of the YFU high school programme. These include a 1-week stay on a farm in the Limpopo province, a 2-week ‘cultural exchange’ to a small rural village in the Eastern Cape, and a 2-week trip to Namibia.
